The Beginning

Although little is known about Nefertari's early life, she was born in Thebes, Egypt in 13000 BC to the Pharaoh Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye . It is thought that she was raised in the royal court in Thebes and received high education since she was able to both read and write hieroglyphics. She was married to Ramses II at fifteen years old.

She was praised as “Sweet of love”, “His (Ramses II) beloved”, “The great of praises” and many more. The Warrior

Although Nefertari was never herself involved in any battles but she played a role in the political side of kingdom because she was able to both read and write hieroglyphics. During her time, Egypt became allies with the Hittites, a clay tablet signified the peace treaty, dating back to 1269 BC and was signed by Hattusilli II, ruler of the empire at the time. Nefertari held a significant position in the foreign politics of Egypt, this is justified by the fact she was called “The mistress of upper and lower Egypt” (a name usually meant for the pharaoh) it is speculated that she was not just in charge of religious affairs but also other things. Through her letters to the Hittites it is proven that she may have helped Egypt in diplomacy.

The God

Although the cause is unknown, Nefertari was believed to have died at around 1250 BC at age 40-50. Nefertari received one of the most lavish tombs in the valley of queens as she was the favorite consort of Ramses II. Nefertari associated herself with Hathor, the ancient Egyptian goddess of fertility, the sky. She believed in the afterlife and that she would meet the God Osiris in the field of reeds after death. Nefertari was mummified in the valley of queens in an exquisite tomb that was extravagantly garnished with lustrous artworks and treasures. It is thought that her tomb was robbed of most valuables including her mummy, around 1109 B.C while her tomb was officially found in 1904 but by that time the only part of her mummy found was her knees..

The Builder

During her life Nefertari had many monuments and structures built for her. This was due to the fact that she was the favourite wife of Ramses II, who was fascinated by architecture. Around 1264 – 1244 BCE Nefertari built the temple of Abu Simbel built in honour of the Goddess Hathor. Another intricate and beautiful threshold made for Nefertari was her tomb, it is described by some to be the most vibrant and colourful tomb in the valley of queens, the purpose of this was to ensure that Nefertari made it comfortably to the afterlife and display how much Ramses II cared for his consort.
